Translation by Bartholomaeus Christel of Tanner’s Societas Jesu usque ad sanguinis et vitae profusionem militans, an illustrated work on Jesuit missionaries martyred in the Americas and elsewhere. Dramatic stories of religious heroism in foreigh lands enjoyed great popular appeal in seventeenth-century Europe, where they also served as propaganda for the mission effort.
